Johannesburg - Twenty-eight men appeared in the Carletonville Magistrate's Court on Monday charged with the murder of two men, Gauteng police said.

“They appeared in court facing murder charges today, and the case was remanded to September 23,” spokeswoman Lt-Col Khensani Magoai said.

The men, aged between 22 and 42, were arrested on Sunday, in Carletonville, west of Johannesburg, after a man was assaulted and a body was found in Blyvoor Block 8.

Magoai said there was a shooting in the area on Saturday night.

“When the police were conducting an operation the following day the assaulted man was found in Block 8, and was taken to hospital, where he later died,” she said.

Another man was found shot dead in the same area. Local residents pointed the suspects out to police.
