Johannesburg - Four men have been arrested after allegedly robbing a factory in Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal, police said on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the arrests were made Tuesday morning at around 09:30 on Schonland street.

“The factory was robbed by four suspects who entered the premises and assaulted their victims,” he said.

Naicker said the men, aged between 30 and 40, robbed them of cash and cellphones at gunpoint before fleeing the scene in a white VW Polo vehicle.

Police were alerted to the incident and the suspects were arrested a short distance away from the crime scene, Naicker said.

“Four pistols, four cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash were recovered.”

Naicker said the vehicle was impounded since it was used in the crime and the ownership of the vehicle still needed to be confirmed.

The firearms that were seized would be subjected to ballistic testing to determine if they were used in any other crime.

The men were to be detained at the Newcastle police station and charged for robbery as well as possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and were expected to appear in the Newcastle Magistrates Court soon.
