Pretoria - The police’s tactical response team were deployed at the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday when it emerged that two suspects, arrested after allegedly robbing Crime Line head Yusuf Abramjee and his family on Friday, were planning to escape from the holding cells.

Police received information that the suspects had tried to bribe prosecutors and allegedly offered to buy the docket from officers, to no avail.

They face charges of robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and stolen property, and extortion. The matter was postponed on Wednesday.

The two men appeared before magistrate Bheki Ntshingila. Tactical response team members guarded the court in case the men tried to escape.

Abramjee is to appeal to the national director of public prosecutions to investigate the matter and to explain why a third man, arrested with the other two, was released, allegedly before the police were consulted, as he apparently had an alibi.

The matter resumes on December 4. Abramjee is to lead a protest, demanding that bail be denied.
