Durban - A 25-year-old man accused of being a serial rapist allegedly preyed on job-seeking women for three years before being caught by police.
Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said the man was accused of committing at least nine rapes, including that of a 14-year-old girl. He was arrested at his home in May by the Ntuzuma Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
Zwane said the man allegedly lured his victims - from KwaMashu, Newlands East, Sundumbili, Phoenix, Mandeni and Mtunzini - by promising them jobs.
“The accused would set up appointments with those he could contact telephonically. When victims arrived at the meeting spot in isolated areas, he would threaten them with a knife, rape them and rob them of cellphones and money,” said Zwane.
The man is alleged to have committed five rapes in Newlands East and was linked through DNA to four others in Zwane.
He and three accomplices are alleged to have raped the 14-year-old girl.
He is alleged to have used a firearm in one incident.
He appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court last month.
He is to appear in the Durban Regional Court on July 28.
