Johannesburg - The photograph of the man accused of throwing acid over his ex-girlfriend can be published, the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court ruled on Wednesday.

Media houses had applied to take his photographs and attempted murder accused Jan Pieterse, 29, objected.

Prosecutor Mahange ka Mzizi told the court publication of the photographs would not affect the case as no identity parade would be conducted.

Pieterse appeared briefly in court on Wednesday and his case was postponed to February 11.

The State alleges he tried to kill his ex-girlfriend, Ines Antonio, 22, by throwing acid over her outside her house in Sydenham on November 3. She sustained burns to her face and chest.

Their daughter, who was with Antonio at the time, sustained minor burns to her arms.

Pieterse emerged from the holding cells below the court with a T-shirt over his head. He wore a jersey over a checked shirt. He looked around the court to greet the sole family member amongst the journalists.

He then removed the T-shirt, revealing long black hair, but quickly covered his head again once the ruling was made and photographers started taking his picture.

Henk Pretorius, for Pieterse, told journalists outside the court that the case was postponed because a medical report and statement from Antonio were outstanding.

“We will know on the next appearance what to do. I still need to consult further with my client.”
