Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has appointed advocate Gerhard Visagie as acting head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), the presidency said on Monday.

“Advocate Visagie is the executive manager of legal services in the SIU and has been with the institution since 1997, having previously served in the erstwhile Heath commission,” spokesman Mac Maharaj said in a statement.

Visagie's appointment followed the resignation of SIU head Vas Soni.

Soni resigned for personal reasons, as his wife Anitha was unwell.

He was appointed by Zuma in September 2013.
