The bail hearing for alleged bogus doctor Jonathan Kinane and his co-accused, Ivan Kiganyi, has been postponed to Friday by the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court.

The court heard on Wednesday that Kinane was not there for the bail hearing because he was prevented by the police investigating officer from leaving a police station.

The two – both Ugandan nationals – are herbalists. They face charges of administering abortion procedures without the required licence. They have been in police custody since December last year.

According to court papers, the two allegedly told women they were doctors with the power to communicate with ancestors.

They are accused of defrauding a local woman of R103 000.

The lawyer for the two men, Phumlani Fakude, told the court on Wednesday that Kinane had been prevented from attending the bail hearing by the investigating officer at a local police station. – Sapa
