Johannesburg - R80 000. This is the suspected reason Zitha Nzama allegedly shot and killed Constable Malesela Ledwaba.

The Star understands that this is part of the evidence that the State will present next week when Nzama applies for bail.

The State maintains that he killed Ledwaba so he could evade arrest and keep the loot.

Nzama was allegedly part of a 13-man gang that stormed The Bakery Shoppe, a bakery at Park station, central Joburg, at about 5am on March 24 and made off with what is believed to be R80 000.

Police were soon notified and rushed to the scene.

Nzama allegedly hid himself among the many people who were rushing to taxis, trains and buses at the busy station.

When Ledwaba and the other officer ran after the robbers, Nzama saw them.

He allegedly left his hiding place and followed Ledwaba, then shot him from the back.

Ledwaba went down and Nzama allegedly shot him several times, then took his service pistol.

On Tuesday, Nzama appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court to face charges of murder and robbery with aggravated circumstances.

Prosecutor Richard Mashobane told the court that ballistics had been done on the gun believed to be the murder weapon and that results were still outstanding.

He also said a video that captured the robbery had been analysed by experts and that the State was still awaiting the results.
