Durban - Police arrested an alleged drug dealer and shot dead two dogs that the man set on officers when he tried to flee in Bethelsdorp, Eastern Cape, the Hawks said on Friday.

The incident happened on Thursday after police received a tip-off that a drug consignment was to be delivered at a house in Bethelsdorp.

“Upon arrival at a house, the officers noticed a young man running through the backyard carrying a box. After realising he was cornered by the Hawks, he dropped the box, and set vicious dogs on the men of the law before jumping the wall,” said Hawks spokesman, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

The man was arrested.

“The dogs charged at the police and in self defence, the police shot the two dogs. The SPCA was informed about the incident.”

Police discovered 14 000 mandrax tablets inside the box. The drugs were estimated to be worth more than R500 000. The man, aged 23, will face charges of possession of drugs in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court soon.
