Johannesburg - The ANC on Thursday welcomed the concerns raised by Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng on problems facing the judiciary.

“The African National Congress has noted with appreciation the concerns raised by the Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng on the need for capacity, budget, and infrastructure for effective performance of this important arm of the state,” spokesman Zizi Kodwa said in a statement.

Mogoeng on Wednesday said the gap between the judiciary's workload, budget, and infrastructural needs was a key problem affecting this critical arm of the state.

The judiciary had been denied things it needed to perform its duties, he said.

“The list goes on. This not only undermines the independence of the judiciary, but also its dignity and effectiveness.”

Kodwa said urgent intervention was needed to ensure that victims who expected recourse from the courts were not left disappointed due to the incapacity of the judiciary.

“We also believe that a resourced judiciary will be able to assert its independence and perform expeditiously on its mandate. The government must assist in addressing these concerns urgently,” Kodwa said.
