Johannesburg - A 17-year-old pupil from the Landulwazi Secondary School in Thokoza, south of Johannesburg, was allegedly shot and killed by a foreign national after the boy and a group of friends kicked down his informal shop’s burglar bars, Gauteng police said on Friday.
Police spokeswoman, Lieutenant-Colonel Katlego Mogale, said on Thursday at around 4.30pm the student and his group of friends were meant to travel from Johannesburg to Pretoria, but did not, due to unknown reasons.
“On the way back from train station, they were singing and they went to a spaza shop which is owned by a foreign national. They kicked the burglar door and the owner pulled out a firearm. He fired into the group of learners, injuring the scholar,” Mogale said.
“The scholar was rushed to the nearest clinic but he was certified dead at the clinic.”
The shooting led to angry community members burning a bakkie, which belonged to other foreign business owners, about five hundred meters from the crime scene.
She said police were called and four people including the shop owner, who allegedly shot the teenager, were arrested.
Ammunition was found in their possession, but the firearm was not recovered.
“One shop and three containers were destroyed and burnt.”
Mogale said three people were arrested for public violence.
