Cape Town - Telkom has expressed concern about the alarming rate at which businesses nationwide are being targeted after two of its stores in different provinces were attacked in less than five days.

This was said by Telkom spokesman Pynee Chetty on Monday after two Telkom stores were robbed.

A Telkom Direct store in Sea Point became the latest shop to be affected when armed men stormed the premises at 9.30am on Monday.

Another Telkom store, at Irene Village Mall in Centurion, Gauteng, was robbed on Friday.

Police spokesman Tembinkosi Kinana confirmed the incident.

“An armed robbery incident took place this morning (Monday) at about 09.30 in the business premises in Main Road, Sea Point.

“According to the reports, four armed men entered the shop and demanded keys to the safe and then took an undisclosed amount of cellphones and cash.

“Thereafter they fled the scene.

“No injuries were reported. Police are investigating a case of armed robbery.

“No arrests have been made,” Kinana said.

Police said a suspect had been arrested in connection with the Irene Village Mall robbery on Friday.

A group of armed men had entered the Telkom store, demanding keys to the safe.

They took cellphones and cash before firing shots while fleeing in two vehicles, said Gauteng police commissioner, Lesetja Mothiba.

The South African Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC), the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa, Business Against Crime South Africa, the SAPS, retailers and shopping centre owners recently formed an anti-crime collaborative forum to curb the robberies nationwide.
