Cape Town - An application to amend murder accused Johannes Christiaan de Jager's charge sheet was granted by the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday.

Prosecutor Romay van Rooyen said the amendments to the charges were purely technical in that they had erroneously referred to the old Criminal Procedures Act.

“It does not prejudice the accused because the act and the averment is still the same. The sentence of life sentence is still the same,” she said.

Sakkie Maartens, for De Jager, said he had no objections to the technical amendments.

“The defence's case would not have been dealt with in any other way,” he said.

Acting Judge Chuma Cossie assented to the application. She was to hear closing arguments later on Wednesday.

De Jager, 49, has pleaded not guilty to killing 16-year-old Mpumalanga resident Charmaine Mare last January, and not guilty to raping and killing 18-year-old prostitute Hiltina Alexander in 2008. - Sapa
