Johannesburg - Police have launched a manhunt for a group of armed men who held up staff at a petrol station in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, said police on Friday.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the group was armed with rifles and pistols, and after they held up staff and blasted the safe open, they fled the scene with the cash.

The incident occurred after 3am on Friday.

“It is alleged that a group of armed men, went into the quick shop of the filling station and held the employees and customers at gunpoint while others kept watch outside. They forced all of them to the back office and kept them guarded as the men continued to plant explosives in the safe and blasted it,” said Mohlala.

Mohlala said the alleged robbers fled the scene in a white VW Golf 7 and a Chevrolet sedan with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police were investigating and the suspects were still at large.
