Twelve police officers, including 10 from the Durban organised crime unit, were granted R5000 bail each by the Durban Regional Court on Thursday.

The officers were arrested on Wednesday and would face charges that include murder and racketeering.

Of the arrests, 10 were made in KwaZulu-Natal, one in Rustenburg, and one in Pretoria. Two of the officers arrested are members of the national intervention unit.

This brought the number of officers arrested from the Cato Manor unit to 28.

In June, 18 policemen were arrested on 71 charges, including 14 of murder, 14 of unlawful possession of ammunition, 14 of unlawful possession of firearms, and four of housebreaking.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesman Moses Dlamini said on Wednesday the latest arrests completed IPID's investigations into the Cato Manor unit.

The 12 who appeared on Thursday included KwaZulu-Natal Hawks boss Maj-Gen Johan Booysen.

The other accused are Bongani Zondi, Johan van Tonder, Ernest Nkabane, Nico Crouse, Thomas Dlamuka, Sandile Mfene, Sibongile Sikhulumi, Vincent Auerbacht, Shane Smith, Anogran Pillay and Mukesh Panday.

All 30 would appear in the Durban Regional Court on Friday.
