Durban - A prominent Pietermaritzburg attorney who was disbarred after allegations of theft of Road Accident Fund money, has had 18 more charges of theft levelled against him, totalling R6.9 million.

Sundeep Singh was struck off the roll of attorneys in April last year after an allegation by a client, local widow Radha Govender, that he stole R876 736 – money she was due to receive from the fund after her husband’s death.

The state added 18 more charges to the charge sheet on Friday, when Singh appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court.

After his disbarment, Singh worked as a freelance consultant on land claims/restitution cases with the permission of the law society.

Singh was admitted as an attorney in 1990. He was struck off for “unprofessional, dishonourable and unworthy conduct” in 1993, after stealing R249 000 from a deceased estate.

He pleaded guilty and was jailed for five years, with two years suspended. He was reenrolled nine years later.

Singh intends pleading not guilty to the theft charges and is on R10 000 bail.
