Johannesburg - The Generators Actors Guild has decided to take MMSV Productions to the High Court.

They are challenging both the production house’s existing contractual terms with the cast and the breach of their constitutional rights.

They delivered a letter demanding that the “new” Generations be taken off air no later than January 10 next year.

Failing to do so will lead them to take legal action.

The cast decided to get a second opinion from Advocate Dali Mpofu, who advised that the matter primarily involved contractual and constitutional questions, and not only labour rights alone. The rights of the public are also greatly affected, according to him.

Bulelani Mzamo, the cast’s attorney, said: “The decision by MMSV Productions and the SABC to create a new show while the case with the Generations cast was as yet unresolved represents a breach of the contractual and fundamental constitutional rights of the actors.”

He said the cast wished to return to work on the terms that had been agreed upon.

Commenting on the latest legal action, the Generations Actors Guild said: “We are and have always been clear about what we wanted – to work in an environment where our rights were respected, and the agreements that we had made with the two entities were held up.”

Meanwhile ratings for the popular soapie have dropped, with reports saying ratings for the debut episode of the “new” Generations managed to pull an underwhelming 7.5 million viewers.
