Durban - A 27-year-old bank employee has been arrested for his part in an Empangeni robbery that ended with a police officer being shot dead earlier this month.

Police said the man provided information to robbers that two women had just withdrawn a large sum of money from the bank.

He allegedly gave the robbers a description of the women and they then followed them and robbed them.

Warrant Officer Niren Ramsaroop was on duty at the time and, with his colleagues, was approached by the women, who said R110 000 in stokvel earnings had been taken.

Ramsaroop spotted one of the men believed to have been involved and grabbed him. A tussle ensued and Ramsaroop was shot in the chest.

Before he died, Ramsaroop returned fire at one of the suspected robbers, who was wounded and taken into police custody. Another escaped.

Police said the bank employee would face charges of robbery.
