Pretoria - Informal traders' organisation Tshwane Barekisi Forum is violent and confrontational, the City of Tshwane informal traders' steering committee said on Tuesday.

“They employ criminals and nyaope addicts to loot business to heighten their existence and build fear and victimisation within the city,” committee spokesman Strike Sebake told reporters in Pretoria.

He said the Tshwane Barekisi Forum had no mandate.

“The forum is a splinter organisation without a mandate of the traders in the city and does not offer a meaningful solution to the challenges posed by informal trade.”

Last week members of the Barekisi forum protested in central Pretoria against what they claim is harassment by Tshwane metro police. They also want action taken against an officer who shot dead vegetable seller Foster Jan Rivombo in January. - Sapa
