Johannesburg - A startling video of a smash-and-grab in progress has gone viral around the country.

The 50-second clip, which was uploaded on YouTube on Thursday, has had more than 50 000 views.

It shows a white Land Rover Discovery stuck in traffic in Witkoppen Road before the Cambridge Road intersection.

A man, who looks and acts like a beggar, comes up to the passenger-side window and cups his hands, pleading for food or money.

The man then takes three calculated steps back, flings a missile at the window and throws himself halfway into the car.

It is unclear whether he steals anything, but he flees within seconds of his smash-and-grab, jumping over the overpass and disappearing into a thicket.

The incident took place at about 7pm.

eBlockwatch founder André Snyman said they get many reports of smash-and-grabs on his anti-crime and conservation group.

“Smash-and-grabs have been around for about 10 years, but they have increased since the Joburg metro police have allowed people to sell things at robots,” he said.

“Because of this, drivers close their windows and look straight ahead when they stop at traffic lights to avoid the vendors. The criminals are utilising this opportunity.”

Tips to keep you safe

Arrive Alive’s tips on how to be safe on the road.

* Lock all your doors and close the windows.

* Avoid opening your windows, talking to vendors or anyone giving out flyers.

* Be alert at intersections or when stopping your vehicle.

* Be wary of people standing at intersections.

* If you encounter obstacles like rocks or tyres, don’t get out. Reverse and drive off in the opposite direction.

* If it’s late at night, slow down in advance so that the light changes to green when you reach the intersection.

* Be wary when you see broken glass. It could be a hotspot.
