Durban - A body that was found in a burning car in Durban has no link to the owners of the car, who had reported it stolen in 2014, police said on Friday.

Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said police were alerted to the burning car at the corner of Legacy Road and Malacca Road in Redhill.

Once the blaze had been doused by the eThekwini Metro Fire Brigade a body was found in the boot of the VW Polo.

The 51-year owner of the car had reported it stolen when she was robbed in her house in Sydenham in August last year. The robbers who held up her up in her home, demanded the keys and drove off with the car.

Zwane said that there appeared to be no link to the body in the car and that of its owner or her family.

Zwane said a case of murder had been opened at the Greenwood police station.

Kyle van Reenen, the spokesman for Crisis Medical Paramedics said the body was too badly burnt to determine whether it was male or female.
