Johannesburg - A former police reservist was due to appear in the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Friday following his arrest for alleged corruption and impersonating a police officer, the Hawks said.

Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Robert Netshiunda said they received information from that the man was collecting money from a lodge owner. This was done under the pretence that he would prevent the police and Gambling Board officials from raiding his lodge in which he operated gambling machines without proper documentation.

Netshiunda said the complainant became suspicious when the police still came and raided his lodge despite him having paid more than R35 000 in installments to the bogus cop.

Netshiunda said an investigation would be launched to ascertain why the former reservist still possessed a police appointment card and a wallet with a police badge on it.

The lodge owner had been arrested previously for illegal gambling activities and according to Netshiunda the latest incident was being investigated.
