Cape Town - The Department of Social Development is set to intervene after a three-year-old boy was found wandering around a cemetery in Plumstead on Saturday.

Lucinda Evans, from Philisa Abafazi Bethu, an organisation that helps find missing children, said after tracking down the child’s family she made the decision not to return the boy.

“We sat down with the family and it was felt we’d better get intervention from the department,” she said on Monday morning.

The child had been left at the cemetery on Saturday. However, his family had only reported him missing at around 8pm on Sunday, said Evans.

“Apparently there were four funerals at Plumstead cemetery on Saturday.

“A motorist noticed him alone after everyone had left.”

The child was taken to Diep River police station before he was taken to a place of safety.

Evans said the boy told them his name was Llewellyn, but couldn’t say who his parents were.

On Monday morning, she drove the child to the offices of the Department of Social Development.

She expected that the toddler would be taken in until better living arrangements could be made.
