Johannesburg - A man was arrested on Tuesday morning for allegedly shooting and injuring Boy Mamabolo - Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Maleman’s nemesis - and three others in Polokwane on Sunday night.

“The suspect was accompanied by his lawyer when he handed himself over in the early hours of this (Tuesday) morning,” Limpopo police spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

The gunman cannot be identified until he appears in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court today to face four charges of attempted murder. However, The Star has reliably learnt that the gunman is former ANC Youth League Limpopo secretary Jacob Lebogo.

The league’s spokesman Bandile Masuku confirmed on Monday that is was Lebogo.

“The alleged perpetrator is said to be the former secretary of the province, Lebogo,” he said.

Mulaudzi said Mamabolo was in a serious but stable condition at Limpopo Medi-Clinic in Polokwane. The three others, who were apparently Mamabola’s friends, were treated at hospital and released.

Mamabolo’s uncle Sunny, who visited him in hospital on Monday, said his condition was stable.

“He is recovering well and is able to talk now. I think the doctors have done a great job,” said Sunny.

He said Mamabolo’s mother was distraught at her son’s shooting.

“She is devastated. She hasn’t even come to visit him in hospital because she has been crying right through,” said Sunny.

Mamabolo, the chairman of the ANC’s Milo Malatjie branch, was shot at a Metro FM gig in Waterland, Polokwane.

Three shots were fired and three other men were injured.

Metro FM DJ Glen Lewis tweeted about the shooting: “Someone has been shot during my set at Waterland… apparently has to do with politics.”

After the shooting, Lebogo was allegedly whisked away from the scene in someone’s car.

He allegedly left his Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, which the police later seized. He was said to have fled to Gauteng.

A source who attended the gig said: “The bikers wanted to burn (his Jeep Grand Cherokee after he was whisked away.) But we pleaded with them not to burn it.”

In January, Mamabolo appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on 72 counts of fraud.

Malema opened a crimen injuria case against Mamabolo in January after he apparently threatened to exhume the body of Malema’s late mother, Mahlodi.

A week later, the case was provisionally withdrawn in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court.
