East London -

The Buffalo City metro expressed shock on Friday after lawyer Dali Mpofu was stabbed and robbed near East London's Eastern Beach.

“The city is deeply shocked by the unfortunate incident that has befallen advocate Dali Mpofu,” spokesperson Keith Ngesi said in a statement.

“We wish Mr Mpofu a speedy recovery and hope that the police will move swiftly with their investigation.”

According to a report by the SABC, Mpofu remains in a serious but stable condition after he was stabbed and robbed on Thursday. No arrests have yet been made.

Mpofu is representing the miners involved in last year's shooting in Marikana, North West.

Ngesi said the city requested police to conduct frequent patrols and random raids at crime hot spots.

He advised the public not to walk alone and to lock their valuables in their vehicles while enjoying the metro's beaches.

“The metro still strives to be a safe place to be,” he said.

On Thursday, police spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci said two people attacked the former SABC chief executive on Esplanade Road at around 3pm.

“He also sustained stab wounds in the upper and lower body, and was rushed to a hospital in East London,” Soci said.

The SABC reported that the attackers took Mpofu’s cellphone.

The broadcaster said Mpofu was on a short break before the Farlam Commission of Inquiry into the Marikana shootings resumed next week. - Sapa
