Durban - While Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper, Brilliant Nhlanhla Khuzwayo, was being crowned man of the match after helping his side beat arch-rivals Orlando Pirates to win the MTN8 cup final at the weekend, his uMlazi family home was being broken into.
His aunt, Sibongile Khuzwayo, posted on a social networking site about the break-in.
She wrote that it was shocking that greedy people had ruined the family’s excitement after Khuzwayo had played so well.
She told the Daily News that thieves had broken into a cottage at the family’s home in Umlazi P-Section on Saturday night and helped themselves to cellphones and cash that had been put aside for bus fare.
“It was despicable what we saw, the cottage had been ransacked, but fortunately, they did not take television sets and other heavy furniture. They only took cash for our bus fare,” she said.
She said the family had decided not to report the matter to the police station, but rather approach the company which had installed the alarm system.
There were 44 000 burglaries from homes in KwaZulu-Natal from April last year to March this year, according to the latest police statistics, released on Friday.
There were 981 residential burglaries in uMlazi over the period and the figure for the whole country was 260 460.
Khuzwayo, 24, took home R8 000 for his man-of-the-match performance, stopping five shots that looked like certain goals to help Kaizer Chiefs lift the cup and R8 million in prize money.
He had been selected to play in Durban after the injury of first-choice goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune.
Sibongile Khuzwayo said her nephew’s success was thanks to a combination of brilliance and luck.
“The family screamed with excitement after the match.
“We are very proud of him. He has become very popular in the neighbourhood, his fans come from everywhere to congratulate him on his brilliant performance.”
The family had not been worried when Khuzwayo relocated to Gauteng two years ago after being signed by Chiefs, one of the biggest clubs in the premier soccer league.
“We knew he would behave himself because he has always been like that.
“We often advised him to focus on his game and learn from the team’s number one goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune,” his aunt said.
