Bloemfontein - The body of a newborn girl was discovered wrapped in plastic bag and dumped near the railway line in the Bloemfontein Central Business District (CBD), police said on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Captain Chaka Marope said the baby was discovered on Tuesday at 5:30 by a person walking past.

“The gruesome discovery was made by a passerby when he tried to empty the plastic bag that was in the rubbish corner and alerted the police who were in the vicinity.”

Marope said the body was found with burn wounds on the face and on the right hand.

“The baby was wearing a pink baby gown and estimated to be two to three weeks old.”

No arrests have been made and a case of murder has been registered for further investigation.

Marope said a postmortem would be conducted to establish the actual cause of death.
