Durban - A bystander was hit in his leg when he was caught in the middle of a shoot-out between drug dealers in Phoenix on Monday.

It is alleged that the bystander, 37, had been at a tuck shop talking to friends on Canbury Road, Eastbury, when a car drove up and its occupants started shooting, said police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane.

“The motive of the incident is unknown at this stage. Phoenix police are investigating a case of attempted murder, but no arrests have been made,” Zwane said.

Glen Naidoo, of KZN VIP protection, confirmed the incident and said that the man was treated by KZN VIP paramedics before being taken to hospital.

“It is alleged the victim was making a purchase at a local tuck shop when a known drug dealer stopped and fired sever-al gunshots. The injured man was not the intended target. The gunman continued shooting at another man who had been in the vicinity. The gunman ran out of bullets and had to drive off,” he said.

Medics also treated witnesses who were traumatised.

Witnesses said they were afraid that the gunman might return to hurt them.

“We are in a lot of fear… we have small kids. This drug war needs to stop,” they posted on Phoenix Crime Watch, a community Facebook page.
