Johannesburg - A group of armed men robbed a bakkie transporting cash as it left Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday morning, Gauteng police said.

“At around 5.45am this (Thursday) morning an unknown number of armed suspects ambushed a security van transporting cash from the airport,” said spokesman Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng.

The gang used a white Mercedes-Benz to ram the bakkie off the road.

They removed the canopy and took an undisclosed amount of cash before making their getaway in three cars - a BMW X5, Golf 6 GTI, both white, and a black Ford ST. No shots were fired.

“Three security personnel were injured during the robbery and are receiving treatment at a local hospital,” Mofokeng said.

Mofokeng appealed to anyone with information about the gang's whereabouts to contact police. - Sapa
