Durban - Police exchanged fire and nabbed three men alleged to have robbed two cash-in-transit guards of a shop’s takings in Nongoma.

One suspect was shot dead, while another was wounded.

Police said five men, aged between 30 and 35, struck when the guards went to collect money at a shop in the Nongoma Mall on Tuesday.

The men left in a VW Jetta. They were spotted by police, and it resulted in a gun battle, said police spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker.

“Police returned fire and a 30-year-old suspect was fatally wounded. A second suspect was also arrested while three others managed to flee,” Naicker said.

An AK-47 was recovered after the men fled. Naicker said the police later spotted the three fugitives in another car.

“Another gun battle ensued and one of the suspects was wounded while a second was arrested. The third managed to flee. A 9mm pistol was recovered at the scene of the second shooting.

The three suspects were due to appear in the Nongoma Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday where they face charges of armed robbery, attempted murder, illegal possession of ammunition, possession of unlicensed firearm and possession of property suspected to be stolen.
