Polokwane – Truck driver Amukelani Rikhotso, who was involved in the crash that led to the death of Public Service and Administration Minister Collins Chabane in March, was on Tuesday charged with assault after he allegedly attacked an SABC cameraman ahead of his appearance in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court.

“The suspect in the culpable homicide case of the late Minister Chabane allegedly assaulted an SABC camera operator, by smashing his fist into the camera lens, which caused slight injuries to the face of the camera operator,” police spokesperson Ronel Otto said.

Rikhotso, who faces three charges of culpable homicide and one of driving under the influence of alcohol, is out on R5,000 bail for his alleged involvement in the crash.

Chabane and his bodyguards, sergeants Lesiba Sekele and Lawrence Lentsoane died in March when Rikhotso’s truck allegedly made a U-turn in front of their car on the N1 between Mokopane and Polokwane.

Chabane and the bodyguards died on the scene. Rikhotso escaped unhurt from the accident.

The culpable homicide case was postponed to September 25, said Otto.
