Cape Town - Western Cape traffic officials confirmed on Monday that 12 people had died on the province’s roads over the weekend.
Western Cape traffic officials stopped a total of 1 750 motor vehicles on Friday and Saturday in 24 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the province, said Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works spokesperson Byron la Hoe.
A total of 29 drivers who were under the influence of alcohol were arrested.
La Hoe said: “A total of 1 083 drivers were screened for being under the influence of alcohol and 29 arrests were made.”
He said the “highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Worcester where the driver’s reading was at 1.01 mg of alcohol/1 000 ml of blood, four times the legal limit of 0,24 mg/1000 ml”.
La Hoe said in addition to the clamp down on drinking and driving, “a total of 3 099 vehicles were screened for speeding and 440 speeding offences were recorded”.
He said officials issued a total of 199 fines worth R237 600 “for various traffic violations ranging from driver fitness to vehicle fitness infringements of the law”.
The highest speed recorded over the weekend was 170km per hour in a 120km zone on the N1 highway in the Beaufort West region.
