Johannesburg - A Kaizer Chiefs player has been arrested for reckless driving while speeding on a highway.

Ekurhuleni police spokesman Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said the 21-year-old man was arrested on Sunday after clocking a speed of 196km/h in a 120km/h zone.

He said the soccer player had been driving on the N12 freeway eastbound between the R59 and Voortrekker Road turn-offs in the Alberton area.

“He refused to stop and it took three Ekurhuleni metro police department motorbikes and a BMW to eventually corner him at the Edenvale exit on the R21 freeway eastbound,” Kgasago said.

“The arrest took place at 7am. He was in a black VW Polo GTI, claiming he was rushing to the club’s camp.”

The player was remanded at Alberton police station.

Police refused to reveal his name, saying he had not yet appeared in court.

Four more speedsters were also arrested on Sunday on the N12 at the Voortrekker turn-off. They were caught doing speeds of between 163 and 186km/h.

Kgasago said the suspects had given various reasons for speeding, including being late for work and taking a sick child to hospital.

“All five were charged with reckless and negligent driving and are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon,” he said.

Meanwhile, 11 more risk-takers were nabbed for speeding on Sunday on the R21 at the R562 bridge in Kempton Park.

“The highest speedster was clocked at 174km/h and the rest registered speeds of between 161 and 171km/h.

“They were charged with reckless and negligent driving and are expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court soon,” Kgasago said.
