Cape Town - The lawyer of the woman accused of stealing a 12-day old baby from Groote Schuur Hospital at the beginning of the year is expected to view video footage related to the alleged kidnapping before the case goes ahead.

Ntombekhaya Mgqaza, 35, accused of snatching baby Baxolile Sem-Sem from the hospital’s maternity ward on New Year’s Day made a brief appearance in the Cape Town Regional Court on Friday.

She faces a charge of kidnapping, but has not yet pleaded.

The court heard that Mgqaza’s lawyer was yet to see camera footage related to the alleged crime.

The matter was postponed to August 11, for the Legal Aid attorney representing Mgqaza to view the footage and to consult with her client afterwards.

At the time of the alleged kidnapping, Baxolile was 12 days old. The incident made headlines and the baby was found in Nkanini informal settlement in Harare a few days later.

Mgqaza will remain in custody until her next court appearance and has abandoned her bail application. Shortly after her arrest some residents in Harare tore down the shack she lived in.
