Pretoria - A morning jog for Comrades Marathon winner Caroline Wostmann turned sour on Wednesday morning when she returned to her home in Pretoria to find it had been burgled.

Wostmann, who rose to fame after winning both the Two Oceans and the Comrades Marathon this year, said she was disappointed at the high level of crime in the country. “Being burgled is somewhat of a drawback, because you have to re-accumulate what you had. But, luckily I have insurance,” she said.

Robbers broke into her Lynnwood home at about 7am and got away with Wostmann’s jewellery, gadgets and her husband’s power tools. “What hurts the most is that the robbers stole my beautiful and sentimental wedding ring,” she said.

Wostmann, who is a management accounting lecturer at Wits University, went for a routine morning jog without any worry and was taken aback to find someone had been in her house. “Luckily there was no one inside when the burglary happened and I glad my husband and children are safe.”

She was also relieved that her marathon medals, including her Comrades medal were not taken. “My medals are safe and sound. I would have been devastated if they made off with them too,” she said.

Police have appealed to witnesses to the incident to come forward.
