Durban - A 76-year-old conman who allegedly passed himself off as a lawyer and fraudulently stole R2.4 million from a trusting family, has been nabbed, police said on Thursday.

Major Thulani Zwane, the SAPS spokesman, said a Mthiyane family had hired him to round off their estate, believing he was a practising attorney.

“The suspect transferred R2.4m to his personal account and spent the money on his personal expenses. Further investigation revealed that he was not a lawyer, and the KZN Law Society confirmed it.”

The suspect was arrested on Wednesday by the Durban Commercial Unit and appeared in the Durban Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday on fraud charges.

Investigators believe that other people might have fallen into the same man’s trap and urged them to come forward and open cases.
