Johannesburg - A man who has been providing cops with misleading information has been arrested for fraud after it was discovered that he used 14 aliases to open fake criminal cases and conned more than 400 people.

Described as cunning and manipulative, the 50-year-old was arrested in Soshanguve on charges of defeating the ends of justice in 2001.

Police said the man has been doing this since 2001 and has been operating in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo.

He allegedly used aliases to open fake criminal cases and to defraud the public. Police are still unclear how he defrauded the public, and why he opened fake cases. He opened a case of armed robbery under the name Mfana Elliot Dibakwane after claiming he was with a friend Zenzo Clifford Zwane at Freedom Park when they were robbed by four men.

Police said he also claimed they were robbed by 16 men travelling in four cars, and that they were with his ex-wife Lizzy. “They robbed him of R26 000, and were all armed with pistols and one R5 rifle.”

Some of the names he used include Clifford Nkuna, Sikwambane Smokey, Hlongwane Clifford Shikwambane, Shikwambane Clifford Mlamli, Cliff Mthethwa and Themba Khumalo.

The man is due to appear in the Kliptown Regional Court on Friday in an unrelated case.
