Durban - A policeman from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, who is accused of shooting a man in a road rage incident in Pietermaritzburg at the weekend, was granted R2 000 bail on Wednesday.

Sergeant Thobelani Khuzwayo, 35, who has 11 years in the police service, has been charged with the attempted murder of Kavlin Naidoo, 27, who is in critical condition at Grey’s Hospital.

The IT engineer was shot in the stomach, and his liver, kidneys and intestines were damaged.

While his mother, Patsy, a counsellor working at the Gift of the Givers, was beside him praying he survived, his father, Dev, and other family members were present in court.

It was alleged that Khuzwayo sped past a vehicle in which Naidoo was a passenger in the city centre on Sunday night and stopped, blocking their way.

Naidoo got out of the car to ask what was happening and Khuzwayo allegedly took out his gun and shot him before driving off.

Naidoo’s brother Davelin had been driving him and his girlfriend.

It was believed that Khuzwayo was driving a state vehicle at the time and was off duty.

Khuzwayo handed himself over to police on Wednesday.

His bail was unopposed and he had to report to the Alexandra Road police station once a week.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has taken over the investigation.

Khuzwayo is to be be given a notice of suspension and will have to make representations as to why he should not be suspended.

The directorate will then decide on the matter.
