A policeman accused of shooting dead a Boksburg man has been released on bail, according to reports on Wednesday.

SABC radio news and Eyewitness news identified him as Raymond le Roux, who appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on a charge of murder.

He reportedly said he killed Rean Ramdin, 29, by accident after he was arrested during a raid at Presley's nightclub in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, for drug possession at the weekend.

Le Roux said Ramdin escaped from the police van and that he fired nine warning shots. The last bullet accidentally hit Ramdin in this chest.

He was released on R2000 bail and was due to appear in court again on April 17. - Sapa
