Rustenburg - A police constable and a reservist from Ikageng in the North West arrested for alleged corruption were granted bail in the Potchefstroom Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, North West police said.
“They were granted bail of R1000 each and are expected to appear in court again on November 25,” said spokesman Brigadier Thulani Ngubane.
A Constable Malatlego, 35, and reservist Elimas Schurutsi, 30, were arrested on Sunday in Ikageng, he said.
The two allegedly tried to extort R2000 from two men they had arrested and charged with buying a stolen laptop and camera.
“The suspects, dressed in civilian clothes came into the complainants' house, saying that they are police officials and forced the complainants to lie on the ground,” Ngubane said.
“They took them with a marked police vehicle to Ikageng SAPS. It is alleged that the complainants' fingerprints were taken and in the process one of the police officials demanded R2 000 from one of the complainants so that they would not be locked up.”
The complainant informed Malatlego and Schurutsi that he did not have money. He called his brother who brought R1000.
The police officials allegedly agreed to take the R1 000 and instructed the complainant to place the money inside a drawer.
Malatlego and Schurutsi drove the complainants back home in a marked police vehicle.
The complainants opened a case at Ikageng police station against the officers, Ngubane said.
