The Tshwane metro police officer who allegedly “lost” a council motorcycle during his recent night out at a pub dressed in uniform is said to be one of three metro officers who have been nabbed drinking in uniform in the early hours of the morning. Two of the officers were facing disciplinary charges after being caught at a pub in Doornpoort last year.

In the latest incident, the officer, whom sources in the department described as “disrespectful”, has not yet appeared before a disciplinary committee in connection with his case.

He allegedly took a top-of-the-range BMW motorcycle after knocking off work and went on a joyride. He ended up at pub where he got drunk and lost the bike. It was later recovered with parts missing. His colleagues seized his pistol when they found him reeking of alcohol.

Community Safety spokesman William Baloyi said the officer was working shifts. This week he had been off and they had yet to hear his side of the story. The officer was facing charges of use of council property without permission and negligent use of a state firearm.

According to Baloyi, the department’s disciplinary procedures depended on the severity of the offence. “In this case we don’t want to pre-empt the outcome because he still has to present his side of the story,” said Baloyi.

The executive director of ProActive Policing, Ndumiso Jaca, said they were waiting for the officer to report for duty after his rest days. - Pretoria News
