Kimberley - Three women, including a 14-year-old minor, were arrested in Kakamas in the Northen Cape after they attempted to flush 1.8kg of dagga, with an estimated street value of R8 615, down a toilet.
Police spokesman Lieutenant Sergio Kock said the arrest was part of a crime prevention operation conducted by the Kakamas police.
“As part of the operation, the police searched several homes and followed up on information provided by members of the community about suspected criminal activity at certain houses in the area.”
He said that at a house in Langverwag in the town, the police became suspicious when the occupants of the house refused to open the door.
“Police could hear the flushing of the toilet and quick-thinking by the police officers led them to the pipes outside the house. When the outlet pipe was opened from the outside, the police found dagga being flushed into the sewerage pipe by the suspects.”
Almost 1.8kg of dagga was found clogged in the outlet pipe leading from the flushed toilet to the sewerage system of the premises.
Three women, including the minor, were arrested and charged with dealing in dagga.
The 14-year-old minor was released in the care of a guardian and the two female suspects, aged 30 and 34, appeared in the Kakamas Magistrate’s Court earlier this week.
The suspects were remanded in custody and the case was postponed to August 4 for a formal bail application.
