Johannesburg - Police say there is no evidence linking any suspect to the murder of Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa.

This is despite SAPS detectives head Major-General Vincent Leshabane saying on Thursday that police were “closing the net” in their nine-month investigation into the murder of the Bafana and Pirates skipper.

Leshabane said the investigation team were making regular visits to KwaZulu-Natal in their search for the missing killer or killers.

The Bafana skipper was shot and killed at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s house in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, in what was widely believed to have been a hit.

The Star reported last month that the delay in the investigation had prevented Meyiwa’s family from cashing in his large life insurance policy.

At a media briefing at police headquarters in Parktown on Thursday, police gave a brief update on the investigation, with Leshabane implying that his investigators were closing the net.

However, that doesn’t mean police are expecting an imminent arrest, as Leshabane was quick to note that they had yet to link any evidence to a suspect.

He appealed to the public to come forward if they had any information, although he said investigators had “overwhelming evidence”.

Provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Lesetja Mothiba said the investigation was difficult and that police would not risk making an arrest without having proper evidence.

He said the moment a breakthrough was made, the country would know about it.

Meyiwa’s family declined to comment, saying they would speak only once an arrest had been made.
