Mthatha – Mthatha police officers foiled a business robbery, in which a security guard was wounded, at Elliot Pharmacy in Elliot Street in the Mthatha CBD, and arrested four suspects, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.

The robbery occurred on Friday when four armed suspects entered the pharmacy and demanded money from the staff, spokesman Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana said in a statement.

The suspects held the staff at gunpoint and took an undisclosed amount of cash from the cash registers. A security guard working at the pharmacy was shot in the neck and robbed of his firearm during the robbery.

Two pharmacy workers were injured but not shot. The injured workers and the security guard were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Police were alerted and managed to arrest four male suspects, aged between 27 and 33, and confiscated three firearms and 34 rounds of ammunition. The money was also recovered.

The suspects were expected to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges relating to armed robbery, illegal firearms, and ammunition, he said.
