Johannesburg - Two men were arrested during an attempted armed robbery at a clothing shop in Ngcobo, near Mthatha, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.

“(There was) an armed robbery at the Ackermans store in Ngcobo. Four unknown armed suspects arrived at the store and tried to rob the cashier,” said Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela.

Police nearby responded immediately and arrested two of the men before they could rob the store.

Two 9mm firearms and 22 rounds of ammunition were recovered.

“Both firearms had their serial numbers filed off,” he said.

“Two (suspects) managed to escape but we're following good leads that might lead to their arrest.”

No-one was injured during the incident.
