Durban - Police are investigating the deaths of two police officers on the Bluff at the weekend.

Constable Lungiswa Nontuthuzeko Mashalaba, 32, of Wentworth SAPS, and Colonel Sipho Zuma, 48, a senior Durban harbour detective, died when shots were fired at a granny flat rented by Mashalaba.

Zuma, believed to be Mashalaba’s boyfriend, reportedly visited her regularly. A neighbour, who asked for his identity not to be revealed, said he was sleeping at about midnight on Saturday when he was woken by gunshots.

“There were four shots and then silence and then another shot,” he said.

Mashalaba and Zuma had arrived at the flat earlier in the evening in separate cars, he said.

Police spokesman Thulani Zwane said: “The motive for the incident is unknown at this stage. Brighton Beach police are investigating a case of murder. An inquest docket was opened.”
