Durban - The hunt is on for three ”dangerous” suspects who escaped from a Durban holding cell on Sunday morning by carving out a hole in the wall of the cell.

Police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker said police at the Bellair station were conducting a routine check of the cells “when they discovered that Vusi Gumede, Bheki Nkosi and Siya Dlamini had escaped. It appeared the three detainees had dug a hole in the wall of the cell”.

“Gumede had been arrested for murder, Nkosi was detained for possession of firearms and Dlamini was arrested for possession of stolen property,” he said.

“A case of escaping from lawful custody has been opened at Bellair police station for investigation.” Naicker said the men were dangerous and that the community should not to try to apprehend them, but rather contact the police as soon as possible should they come into contact with the men.

Bellair police can be telephoned at 031 451 2826, or call any nearest police station, or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.

Provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni condemned the escape.

“We will make sure that we catch and arrest these criminals. We will use all our resources and expertise to put them behind bars so they can face the consequences of their actions.”
