Bloemfontein - Free State police were on Monday still searching for five men who killed a farmer and raped his 16-year-old granddaughter near Odendaalsrus.

The 69-year-old farmer, his daughter-in-law, and her four daughters were attacked on their farm on Thursday, Captain Stephen Thakeng said.

He was shot three times and died on his way to hospital. The robbers cut his safe open and stole an undisclosed amount of cash and a revolver.

“A sixteen-year-old girl was also raped in that incident,” said Thakeng.

The attackers fled the scene in the farmer's bakkie. It was found abandoned on a road leading to the Thabong informal settlement.

“A case of murder and rape was registered for further investigation,” said Thakeng.
