Port Elizabeth - Three armed robbers were arrested and one was killed, after trying to rob a shop in the Queenstown CBD on Monday, Eastern Cape police said.

The robbery took place before the shop opened at 7am, said Warrant Officer Namhla Mdleleni.

“When they (police) arrived at the scene, the suspects shot in the direction of the police and a cross-fire ensued. One suspect was shot and killed while three were arrested,” he said.

One of the robbers arrested was wounded in the shoot-out, and was under police guard in hospital.

An undisclosed amount of money, four firearms, and ammunition was recovered.

“Two of those firearms had serial numbers filed off,” said Mdleleni.

“The firearms will be taken for further ballistic tests to determine if they have been used in the commission of other crimes.”

The police believed other robbers might have escaped.

“Police are appealing to the community not to try to arrest or apprehend the suspects as they could be armed,” said Mdleleni.

People could contact the police in Queenstown if they had information relating to the attempted robbery.
