Cape Town - Two suspected copper thieves were arrested in Kraaifontein, police said on Wednesday.

“On Wednesday, at about 11:30am, Kraaifontein South African Police Service members arrested two suspects for copper theft at the Blue Ridge Sports field in Kraaifontein,” said police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk.

Police reacted to a tip off from security guards who alerted officer that there were four “suspicious” people digging holes in the sports field.

On investigation, police found fresh holes and later found and arrested two of the four suspects who had remained on the field.

Police found stolen copper cables hidden in a building on the premises as well as an axe, crowbar, spanners, a spade, and a bag of clothing.

The suspects, aged 26 and 30, remained in police custody and, once charged, were due to appear in the Kuilsriver Magistrates Court.
